Most of us rat owners are looking for ways to slim down out ratties, but sometimes we do come across those that need to put on a little more weight (example: rescues, lactating females, etc.) This recipe is for underweight rats who are receiving a proper diet (to meet their nutritional needs) but just need extra calories to gain additional weight. It is not only high in calories, but also protein and fiber. And since its not vitamin based like Ensure or Ferretvite, you don't have to worry about exact measurements to prevent vitamin/mineral overdose in the same way you would those products.
16oz can white mild-flavored beans (I use Northern beans)
1/2 can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Rinse and drain the beans then put in a blender. Add 2 1/2 cups water and remaining ingredients. Process until smooth and creamy. Refrigerate overnight. Shake well before serving.
Give a few tablespoons daily. It will last in your fridge for about a week or so, similar to a gallon of milk. I haven't tried but you could freeze in an ice cube tray and have smaller portions to use as you need them.
